Retailer grows from £11m to £34m in 3.5 years

Started by my father Wladslaw Mleczko in 1996 as a single shop in Shepherds Bush, the company was launched at a time when the Polish food market was not as developed as it is today. Prices were extremely high and the range of products limited in a market dominated by few retailers, who so no reason or were not pressured to change.

My father, a few years into retirement, but still full of life and energy, saw an opportunity. He felt that if he offered a wide range of high quality Polish food at a very competitive price, he might be successful. He was right. Four years after the Shepherds Bush shop opened, a second shop was launched in Hanwell, and with the opening of the third in 2006, the expansion of Mlexzko Delikatesy escalated at a rapid pace.

Soon we had 12 shops, complete with bakeries and butchers, providing customers in London with fresh quality food at unbeatable prices, and in 2014, we were turning over £11 million, with my brother Tony and myself at the helm.

There were challenges to further growth, however, and at this point we sought the expertise of ActionCOACH to take our company to the next level. Using L.I.O.N framework, developing team meetings and 121’s to focus our team and drive the right behaviours for top performance, we developed specific Key Performance Indicators to improve accountability, which is absolutely vital when you have over 300 employees at various destinations. Implementing the framework empowered and engaged our staff and virtually immediately, we saw month-on-month growth.

Just four years later, our turnover had more than doubled to 30 million and, last year we were listed in London Stock Exchange Group’s 1000 Companies to Inspire Britain, our customers describing us as the Polish delicatessen Waitrose. As the market leaders in the sector, we are still seeing impressive growth, sustaining the pressures of Brexit and higher prices due the falling pound. Each shop we open is profitable within just a few months because we have :

  • Convenient locations near train/underground stations and or with parking

  • Great logistics
